Chandyholmes 's Battle Road Gloria National 4th Place party [report] [VGC 15]

Translated From: http://chandyholmes.hatenablog.com/entry/2015/09/23/213653

Recently I participated in the Battle Road Gloria National Convention held on September 22nd. I qualified in my block with a record of 3 wins and 2 losses and was regrettably eliminated in the semifinals and achieved 4th Place.

While preparing for the Gloria tournament in August, I knew I wanted to use Mega-Salamence and tried in all my earnest to build around it. This team is the result of what I've been using since then.

Although, I have missed the title of Gloria champion, I am very happy with my result.

Salamence @ Salamencite
Ability: Intimidate > Aerilate
Naive Nature
(base form) 170-160-100-158-90-167
(M-Evolution) 170-170-150-168-99-189

- Hyper Voice
- Double-Edge
-Flamethrower
-Protect

Aerilate boosted Hyper Voice is strong, and can soften up tough opponents for my other Pokemon early in the battle. Additionally, I decided to use Double-Edge so I can deal massive damage to Fairy-Type Pokemon that Salamence strongly dislikes.

It is important to know when to keep Salamence in it's base form so you can use its' Intimidate later on in the battle.

2HKO on 4 HP Landorus-Therian with spread damage Hyper Voice

OHKO on 4 HP Mega Kangaskhan with Double-Edge + Rocky Helmet chip damage

OHKOs 252 HP Mega Gardevoir 15/16 times with Double-Edge

Hydreigon @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
Timid Nature
168-x-110-177-100-165

-Dark Pulse
-Draco Meteor
-Earth Power
-Protect

Adopted on this team construction so it can deal with Pokemon that Salamence has trouble with such as Aegislash, and Cresselia.

Life Orb Earth Power does about 75% to the ever-trendy Shuca Berry Heatran which in conjuction with Substitute can be very annoying to deal with.

Timid Nature was used so I can outspeed Jolly Landorus without Choice Scarf (which is declining in popularity)

f:id:chandyholmes:20150826033246p:plain @  Sitrus Berry

Thundurus-Incarnate @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Prankster
Timid Nature
184-x-90-146-110-170

-Thunderbolt
-Hidden Power (Ice)
-Protect
-Thunder Wave

Salamence can normally out-speed the opponent's Pokemon, but occasionally Tailwind users can cause trouble for it. To rectify this, I have adopted Thundurus and his Thunder Wave to allow my Pokemon to get the advantage even if my opponent sets up Tailwind.

A combination of Salamence's Double-Edge plus Thunderbolt from Thundurus can KO most variants of Kangaskhan.

Outspeeds Jolly 252 Speed Garchomp by one point

f:id:chandyholmes:20150923200103p:plain @ Icicle Plate

Mamoswine @ Icicle Plate
Ability: Thick Fat
Jolly Nature
189-178-101-x-80-145

-Icicle Spear
-Ice Shard
-Earthquake
-Protect

Salamence does not enjoy facing Thundurus, so I wanted to use a Pokemon that could deal with it efficiently. At first I thought about using Terrakion, but Life Orb Thundurus with Grass Knot is fairly popular and can outspeed and OHKO it.

I did not use Tyranitar, because it is vulnerable to Thunder Wave, and i did not want my Thundurus counter to be fully paralyzed before attacking. Thus, Mamoswine was added to the team to fill this role.

I was worried about missing Icicle Crash, so I decided to use Icicle Spear instead. Since Ice is a strong typing for hitting super effectively, i found that Icicle Spear's combined super effective multi hits did more than a single Icicle Crash.

Jolly Nature outspeeds 252 Timid Heatran
EVs allow Mamoswine to survive Kangaskhan-Mega's Low Kick with Intimidate support.

f:id:chandyholmes:20150701001113p:plain @ Weakness Policy

Aegislash @ Weakness Policy
Ability: Stance Change
Quiet Nature
167-70-170-112-171-58

-Shadow Ball
-Sacred Sword
-King's Shield
-Wide Guard

Excellent switch in for Fairy type and Ice attacks directed toward Mega Salamence.

I wanted to use Substitute + Wide Guard on this Aegislash, but Tyranitar was problematic. Sacred Sword helps Aegislash fight off Tyranitar, and in some cases deal heavy damage to Kangaskhan and Heatran with a +2 boosted one.

Many Quiet Aegislash holding Weakness Policy have been using Shadow Sneak as of late, but I liked the protection against Hyper Voice and other spread attacks that Wide Guard brings.

0 Spd because it was unpleasant to be KO'd by Sylveon and Heatran while in Blade-form.

f:id:chandyholmes:20150317180540p:plain @  Rocky Helmet

Amoonguss @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Regenerator
Relaxed Nature
219-x-124-105-112-31

Amoonguss was helpful against dealing with Mega Kangaskhan and Trick Room teams.

EV spread is familiar to many.

An earlier variation of this team was used at another offline tournament and used Tyranitar with Lum Berry and had Salamence using Brick Break>Flamethrower and Hydreigon using Flamethrower>Earth Power. Record was 6 wins, 4 losses.

Final Rating at BS season 11 was 2011 pts in 6th Place, (TN: Kazemachi), but additonally 3rd place (TN: Sana) was also myself as well.

Mega Salamence was tough to use in the Gloria tournament because the prevalence of  Porygon2, and I faced it in semi-finals as well as the match that determined 3rd and 4th place.

I would like to do better if I have the opportunity!

Finally, it was very fun to participate in the Battle Road Gloria National tournament and I would like to thank masa (@masaVAmpharos) for organizing the event.
